From Dr. James' Teachings
Hy Sugar is a diabetic formula, or a formula that helps people who cannot deal with sugar properly. It strengthens the pancreas and liver and allows the body to use insulin more effectively.
Diabetes is a very misunderstood illness. Most of the things that are attributed to diabetes are not the result of the illness itself, but the result of overuse and overmedication with insulin. Decreasing the amount of insulin you are taking while maintaining proper blood sugar levels is a much better choice than taking a high dose of insulin. Because of increased insulin use, the body becomes brittle and circulation decreases.
One of our concerns with a diabetic is the amount of glucose and ketones in the bloodstream. Glucose requires insulin for proper utilization within the cells. Ketones are fats, and fats do not require insulin to be utilized within the body.
When there is an abundance of glucose and insulin, the body utilizes the glucose (sugar) instead of the ketones. The body, the heart, and the large muscles all prefer to burn fat instead of sugar. When the body burns sugar rather than fat, it can contribute to arterial, heart, and circulatory problems.
These levels must remain balanced. High sugar and high fat can result in ketosis, which is a life-threatening illness. Many of the machines used to check blood sugar add the glucose and ketones together, which does not give an accurate reading of glucose in the bloodstream.
If people are taking Hy Sugar and do not notice a change in their test results, it could be because they have one of those machines that adds glucose and ketones together. The best way to isolate the ratio between ketones and glucose is with a Whole Blood Chem Strip.
Regardless of whether you work with a physician who is aware of how to deal with diabetes using herbs, or whether you are simply taking Hy Sugar, decreasing the amount of insulin you are taking while maintaining proper blood sugar levels can significantly improve both quality and length of life. Also, whether you are using herbal therapy or conventional medication, whether your diet is good or poor, you should never stop taking insulin when your test indicates that your glucose is high.
If you and your healthcare provider decide that a glucose tolerance test would be helpful, I encourage you to request the four-hour test rather than the two-hour test. In my experience, the additional information provided by the four-hour test can be valuable in gaining a more complete understanding of how the body is handling blood sugar.

From My Practice
Despite its name, Hy Sugar is not a formula that I reserve only for people with diabetes. In fact, I recommend it much more broadly. Whenever I suspect someone could benefit from additional support for healthy blood sugar regulation, insulin sensitivity, pancreatic function, or liver function, Hy Sugar is one of the formulas I consider.
One area where I have found Hy Sugar to be especially helpful is insulin resistance. Many people are told their blood sugar is "a little high," that they are "borderline," or that they simply need to watch their diet. Supporting the body's ability to use insulin efficiently can be an important part of that picture. I often recommend taking Hy Sugar about 30 minutes before meals so the herbs are already available as the body begins processing food.
Balanced blood sugar does more than influence energy levels. It also plays an important role in metabolism. When the body is able to regulate blood sugar and respond to insulin more efficiently, it is often better able to utilize stored fat as a source of energy. For that reason, I frequently include Hy Sugar as part of a broader wellness plan for clients who are working toward healthy weight management and improved metabolic health.
Of course, no herbal formula can outwork a poor diet. The foods we eat have a tremendous influence on how our bodies function. Herbs provide nutritional support, but they work best when they are combined with healthy eating habits.
One of the resources I recommend most often is a presentation by Jessie Inchauspé, better known as the Glucose Goddess. Jessie is a French biochemist whose work focuses on glucose regulation and the effects of blood sugar on overall health. She does an excellent job of explaining how simple changes, such as the order in which we eat foods and a few other everyday habits, can dramatically reduce glucose spikes without requiring an extreme diet.
Her presentation is easy to understand, practical, and immediately useful. I encourage nearly everyone who is interested in metabolic health to watch it. The concepts she teaches complement my nutritional recommendations beautifully. When those dietary principles are combined with appropriate nutritional support, such as Hy Sugar, many people feel more balanced, have steadier energy throughout the day, and gain a greater sense of control over their long-term health.

Dosage Guide
A personal note for my clients: If we've worked together recently, please follow the recommendations I gave you during your consultation. They were personalized to your individual health needs, goals, and circumstances and may differ from the general dosage suggestions provided here or on the bottle.
Support Needed
Maintenance
Mild
Moderate
Intensive
Common Amount
1 to 2 capsules once daily
1 capsule twice daily
3 capsules once daily
2 capsules twice daily
Once you begin noticing improvement, you can usually reduce to the lowest amount that continues to provide the support you need. I also encourage you to watch Jessie Inchauspé's presentation on blood sugar regulation. As you begin applying those simple dietary habits, many people discover they need less and less Hy Sugar over time. Some continue taking a small maintenance amount, while others eventually find they no longer need the formula at all. Listen to your body and adjust accordingly.
The directions on the bottle provide a general recommendation. In my own practice, I view those amounts as a starting point, not a limit. During times of greater discomfort, I adjust the amount and frequency according to the level of support the body seems to need.

Traditional Use of the Contents
Blueberry Leaf has traditionally been used as a source of naturally occurring compounds that do not require insulin secretion for their utilization.
Yarrow has traditionally been used to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels.
Goldenseal Root has traditionally been used to help support healthy blood sugar levels.
Dandelion Root has traditionally been used to help support healthy liver and pancreas function.
Cayenne has traditionally been used as a catalyst to support the activity of the herbs with which it is combined.
Oregon Grape Root has traditionally been used to support healthy glandular function.
Diatomaceous earth is naturally rich in silicon dioxide, a naturally occurring compound that provides a source of the trace mineral silicon. This supports healthy connective tissues throughout the body.
